Buying Used Equipment
Used Equipment often do not usually come with a warranty, yet it is often extremely advantageous to buy used or rebuilt equipment for a number of reasons. A key one is of course that used equipment with low hours on the engines are often available at very attractive prices, and are substantially below the high retail prices of new equipment. It's even possible to save up to 50% or more by buying low-hour used equipment instead of purchasing new equipment.
Another key benefit to purchasing used trencher equipment is that it is ready for purchase upon demand. It can be bought and installed very quickly. There is little waiting because of limited availability and factory lead times. Purchase and delivery times are less. Many sellers will even include shipping in the cost of the unit.
A disadvantage of purchasing used trencher equipment is that it was owned and used by someone else. A little or nothing may be known about the history of use or maintenance of the equipment.
Important Steps in Buying Used Equipment:
1. Research; do your homework
2. Try the equipment yourself first
3. Fully go over the condition of the equipment; look, listen touch, test the equipment
4. Buy from established dealers, even if it is an established brand of equipment
5. Ask about any extended warranties or maintenance services available
What to look for in a Used Equipment Dealer:
1. Good reputation in the industry, whether selling new or used
2. They are interested in establishing a long term relationship knowing that you may again be looking to buy used equipment in the future
3. They are willing to inspect and repair any potential problems with the equipment
4. They provide limited warranties – 30 or 60 days – to insure you against any unforeseen problems.
5. They allow for total review of the used equipment before purchase.
