Renter's Guide: Learn About Trenchers

Types of Trenchers

A trencher is piece of construction equipment used to dig trenches, typically for laying pipes or cable, or for drainage. Trenchers may range in size from walk-behind models, to attachments for a skid loader or tractor, to very heavy tracked engineering vehicles. Depending on the type of digging implement, a trencher may be classified as a chain trencher or a rockwheel.

Trencher may be combined with a drainage pipe or geotextile feeder unit and backfiller, so drain or textile may be placed and the trench filled in one go.

Landscapers and lawn care specialist use a portable trencher to install landscape edging and irrigation lines. These machines are lightweight (around 200 pounds) and are easily maneuverable compared to other types of trenchers.

There are several types of trenchers, and your choice of which will work best for you will depend on your trenching needs. There are pedestrian trenchers, which are usually self-propelled walk-along units designed for residential or short-run commercial use. Compact trenchers are small riding units designed for light to medium duty commercial use. Heavy duty trenchers are larger riding units designed for medium to heavy duty commercial use, including the trenching for power and communications cables, natural gas, water and sewer distribution lines, commercial sprinkler systems and agricultural irrigation projects, and even pavement cutting.
